Our Why
At The Trip Takes Us, we want to help you travel more and better. What’s stopping you from exploring the globe? Time? Money? Knowledge? Decision fatigue? We will help you overcome all of these obstacles so you and your family can enjoy more travel.
In July 2017, our family experienced a life-changing event. On her way home from work, Kathy was hit head-on by a car while walking in a crosswalk. In a split second, our lives were changed forever. The road to recovery from broken bones, bruises, pain, PTSD, and a traumatic brain injury is long. Every day, we are reminded that tomorrow is not promised to us.
The lesson: Don’t put off the things you want to do! We cannot possibly know what the future will hold, so live your dreams today.
We are not digital nomads or location independent. We are regular people with jobs, kids’ schedules to juggle, volunteer commitments and, sadly, no trust fund. Nevertheless, we have rebuilt our life around travel, and you can too!
The Trip Takes Us is our opportunity to share with you how to build more travel into your life today. We hope to inspire you to stretch yourself, explore new places, avoid common pitfalls, grow, and have fun.
Our Name
We believe in the transformative power of travel, so in naming our blog, we drew on a favorite quote by author John Steinbeck from Travels with Charley: In Search of America:
“Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. Tour masters, schedules, reservations, brass-bound and inevitable, dash themselves to wreckage on the personality of the trip. Only when this is recognized can the blown-in-the glass bum relax and go along with it. Only then do the frustrations fall away. In this a journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it.”
